How we work

Almost everyone benefits from talking to a Counsellor, because a conversation with a counsellor is different. You meet your Counsellor as a new person in your life who knows none of your history, so it’s a chance to tell your story to someone who has no preconceptions about it. So when a Counsellor hears you speak, they are not filtering your experience through what they already know about you - they are hearing you telling your story as if it’s never been heard before.

There’s more too: a qualified and trained counsellor has learned not to hold negative opinions or judgements about you. They have been trained to ask lots of questions, but the questions Counsellors ask are not for their benefit, they are asked to help you express what you think and feel about your own situation. As you say out loud what’s inside you, uncomfortable thoughts and feelings can begin the process of becoming less troubling.

Whether you book an appointment, or just walk-in to speak to one of us, you’ll be met with a warm welcome. One of our counsellors will give you time to talk about whatever you want to, and help you to focus on what matters to you. They’ll also help you explore what you would like to be different.

We ensure that our discussions are discreet, and we make sure that we have a private room available, but if it’s easier to talk outside, or you need a trusted person with you, that’s OK with us. We recognise that some people may be more comfortable with other people nearby, so that’s OK too (but if we think what you want to talk about is best spoken about in private, then we’ll advise a change of location). Each visit can last for up to an hour. At the end of the session we’ll ask you to complete a feedback form, and give you some information about the next steps you can take. You are welcome to book another appointment, or just walk-in again when you feel you’d like to.

We work this way so that we make counselling as accessible as we can to as many people as we can. There are enormous benefits from speaking to a Counsellor, but we know how hard it can be to make the first step. Come and talk to us. We’ll do our best to make it comfortable to talk.
