Our Governing Principles
-
Social Justice and Advocacy
We work from a position of Social Justice, which means that wherever we learn of obstacles to inclusion we will work to remove them. This is within our organisation and outside it.
In our work, we will avoid creating systems that contribute to inequality, discrimination, exploitation and oppression.
Where we see them impacting on the lives of the people we work with, and with those we don’t, we will challenge systemic issues that contribute to inequality, discrimination, exploitation and oppression.
We will support people who recognise and want to challenge societal structures that perpetuate injustice. -
Inclusivity & Diversity
We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, culture, faith, gender, sexual orientation, social class, physical, psychological and spiritual being, and abilities.
We will work hard to ensure that all possible barriers to using our services, or being part of our organisation, are removed.
We do our utmost to meet the unique needs of people from diverse backgrounds. -
Transparency & Accountability
We will work in a way that makes transparency unthreatening by only engaging in work that allows us to proudly share information about all our activities.
We will maintain transparent and open communication channels within the organisation, ensuring all can be informed about our decision-making processes, policies, and practices.
We want to become better at what we do, so will seek out feedback to help us improve, and act upon it.
When we do wrong, we will apologise first and then change what we do. -
Accessibility
We will provide affordable and accessible services to individuals regardless of their financial means, ensuring that economic barriers do not limit access to our support.
We will be flexible, and adjust out practices, whenever necessary, to ensure that we reach diverse populations, including those in underserved, remote or neglected places. -
Education and Training
We will invest in ongoing education and training for colleagues to enhance their understanding of social justice issues.
Equip our colleagues with the tools and support to facilitate open and honest discussions about privilege, bias, and discrimination.
We will share our learning freely in the interest of reducing social inequality. -
Collaboration & Community Engagement
We will communicate, collaborate and form partnerships with community organisations that share our values, and engage with those that do not, to address broad social issues affecting mental health.
We will practice community outreach and develop educational programs that focus on removing stigma, increase awareness, and promote mental health as a social justice issue.
-
Ethical Decision-Making
We will uphold the highest ethical standards in practice, prioritising the well-being and rights of clients while actively challenging discriminatory practices and policies.
Our ethics are based upon the principles in this document, and wherever they apply, the codes of conduct relating to our professional bodies.
-
Development of practice
We will contribute to the advancement of practice knowledge by adapting our own practice to meet the needs of people we work with.
Where opportunities exist we will conduct and support research that explores the intersection of mental health, social justice, and equality.
We will share our practice and with any interested parties who wish to understand the nature of our mission.
